HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Firefighters in Hamden took on the role of Santa to help some deserving families Wednesday, and their acts of kindness were greatly appreciated.

The firefighters put aside their usual duties for a couple hours Wednesday afternoon to do something a little different, they loaded up one of their firetrucks with toys ranging from Barbies to bicycles.

“We’re out in the community a lot and we see a lot of families in need, in our neighborhood in particular,” said firefighter Peter Lynch.

That’s why Engine 2 has been busy collecting toys over the last several weeks.

“We just go and try to make Christmas brighter for our neighbors,” said Lynch.

All those toys were handed out to five families, 16 children all together. The fire truck was essentially Santa’s sleigh, a sight many kids were surprised to see.

“I thought there was going to be some kind of accident,” said one of the children. “I thought something happened.”

But the Smith family quickly realized nothing bad happened at all, as soon as they were each given brand new bikes.

“We didn’t know we were going to get them, but they surprised us with them,” said the Smith kids.

“I was surprised but more happy, more happy for them that they were able to get some bikes,” said Nicola Smith.

Everyone who received presents Wednesday will tell you how something so simple can mean so much.

“We aren’t usually able to get as much as some other people and we appreciate the effort of the fire department,” said Marisela Valencia. “It’s something very thoughtful and it’s spreading the Christmas cheer.”

“It’s as good for us as it is for them,” said Lynch. “We enjoy doing it.”
